How to calculate square footage
Measure the length and width of the area in feet, then multiply them together. Area = length × width. For example, a 12 ft × 10 ft room is 120 square feet. The tool also converts to square meters (multiply sq ft by 0.0929), square yards (divide by 9), and square inches (multiply by 144).
Area conversion reference
1 sq ft = 0.0929 sq m. 1 sq ft = 0.1111 sq yd. 1 sq ft = 144 sq in. 1 sq m = 10.764 sq ft. 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft. 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft. Common room sizes: bedroom ~120–180 sq ft, living room ~200–400 sq ft, garage ~400–600 sq ft.
FAQ
What if my room isn't rectangular?
Divide the space into rectangular sections, calculate each section's square footage separately, then add them together. For L-shaped rooms, split into two rectangles. For irregular shapes, use the closest rectangular approximation.
How much paint do I need per square foot?
One gallon of paint typically covers 350–400 square feet with one coat. Divide your square footage by 350 for a conservative estimate. Multiply by 2 for two coats. Subtract window and door areas if precision matters.
