US sales tax rates reference
Sales tax rates in the US vary by state. Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alaska have no state sales tax. States with the highest combined rates include Louisiana (~10%), Tennessee (~9.5%), and Arkansas (~9.5%). Many states also have local (city/county) rates on top of the state rate.
FAQ
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate (as a decimal). For example, a $50 item at 8.5% tax: 50 × 0.085 = $4.25 tax, and $50 + $4.25 = $54.25 total.
How do I find the pre-tax price from a total?
Divide the total by (1 + tax rate). For example, a $54.25 total at 8.5%: 54.25 ÷ 1.085 = $50.00 pre-tax. This is the reverse calculation mode in this tool.
