How the final grade calculator works
Enter your current grade (the weighted average of all completed work), the percentage weight the final exam carries in the overall course grade, and optionally a specific target grade. The calculator uses the formula: Required = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight. For example, if your current grade is 82% and the final is worth 30%, you need a 93.3% on the final to finish with a 90% (A).
Grade scale reference
A: 90–100% | B: 80–89% | C: 70–79% | D: 60–69% | F: below 60%. These thresholds are common but vary by institution — some use 93% for A, 90% for A−. Check your syllabus for exact cutoffs. If the required score exceeds 100%, the target is mathematically not achievable.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is 'current grade'?
Your current grade is the percentage you have earned so far across all assignments, quizzes, and exams that have already been graded, weighted according to the course grading policy. You can find this in your course management system (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.).
The required score is over 100% — what does that mean?
It means the target grade is no longer mathematically achievable. Focus instead on the highest grade that is still reachable. For example, if a B requires 105%, aim for a C+ or C and see what score that requires.
